Learning to read is a complicated process that requires several areas of the brain to work together to decode, recognize and make sense of what is being read. In this post, I am focusing on ways you can help you child become a more fluent reader. What is reading fluency? Learning to read often occurs around the age of six and continues to develop through childhood and into adolescence. Some young children learn to read before they are six-years-old and some children learn closer to eight-years-old. Learning to read is a lot like learning to walk, some children are early walkers and some walk closerContinue reading Learning to Read: Word Study →

Multi-Sensory Learning at Home

When I think about the ways kids learn and the way an environment can support learning, I am reminded about the importance of providing kids with materials that can help them visualize a concept or an idea they are working on.  Many of us are visual learners and creating a visual to represent a conceptContinue reading Multi-Sensory Learning at Home →

Choosing Picture Books

Kids love to be read to.  When my kids were preschoolers, I read them many classic picture books I loved as a child.  I chose books with rich language, interesting story lines  and captivating illustrations.  These kinds of books often satisfy children’s curiosity and sense of wonder. We also read our fair share of books basedContinue reading Choosing Picture Books →

My daughter’s set up for the “Crystals & Geode” class. She made a tutorial that I share on the Facebook @guidedlearningstudio page.
~Art Class~ My daughter is offering a crystals and geodes class for the family. We have a family tradition of offering classes to each other. I am not sure how it started but we’ve been doing this for many years. There have been Lego build, origami, mathart, and art classes prepared and presented by the kids. It is a way for us to share a favorite hobby, new skill and passion. I am excited to learn how to draw and paint geodes.
All ready for a virtual tutoring sesh. I enjoy using the digital whiteboard #jamboard for literacy & math virtual tutoring sessions. The key to an engaging lesson is maintaining true to interactive “hands-on” learning. I use pictures, sticky notes for labels and virtual math manipulative that can be moved around to help the student make meaning of the concepts. Just like my homeschool lessons or in-person lessons, I like to ask questions as I guide the students through activities.
Fraction work doesn’t look perfect. It is an active process that requires materials, language and lots of verbalizing to help clarify thinking. In this photo the student is thinking through what equivalent fractions are and how to make sense of them. Mathematics is all about sense making.
