Before the school year began, I hosted a note taking class for middle school learners. I offered this class in response to a parent request. It was a wonderful way to welcome students to the studio and help them begin middle school with note taking tips and resources. Below, I share some of the noteContinue reading Tips for Taking Notes →

Welcome

Welcome to the Guided Learning Studio! I’m Maria. A mom of three and a former classroom teacher turned tutor. I am committed to providing engaging learning experiences based on a learner’s needs and interests.

My sweet daughter has been busy making art, diy and bujo videos over the last couple of weeks. @_littlemissmacaron_ posts instructive and fun videos for spring doodles, galaxy paintings and more. Today she shared ideas for drawing mandalas.
We had a mathy start to our day today. Math is my favorite subject. I try to convey my joy and interest to my kids and my students. We play games to review content, use materials to build models, draw and write to think through ideas and solve problems. In today’s lesson, we used the Montessori Geometry Stick Materials, a protractor, paper and finished with some @aopsbeastacademy problems. We also played “Polygon Capture” to start the lesson. Learning mathematics is about observing, making sense of concepts, and generalizing ideas.

All set for a tutoring sesh on the patio. I am so thankful I have this outdoor space to work with my students safely.
~ Decomposing Fractions ~ I found a way to use the square @spielgaben tiles to explore fractions. We have been using fraction circles but I wanted to expand how fractions can be represented. It is important to remember that the math is not in the material. Math materials, whether Montessori or Lakeshore, are just a way to represent a concept. The learner has to make sense of the idea not the material. Math materials can be used to demonstrate a concept or better yet a learner uses the material as a tool to solve a problem.
Some spring break clean-up and planning happening this week. I brought out the @spielgaben to see what I can use for geometry lessons. Sadly, it’s been gathering dust because we’ve had this about 10 years. I do believe we’ve outgrown this set...unless y’all have ideas for modeling 5th grade mathematics plus. The cute open-ended invitations to learn aren’t really applicable anymore 😢.
