My 8yo is captivated by origami lately. This morning he showed me a folded paper he made with a triangular prism in it. Origami has been a gateway into thinking about geometry. I showed him this “Geomtric Nets Project Book” & He was excited to picked 5 nets to make after school today. On a side note, the assistant teacher in his class told him that origami was a waste of paper. ☹️ & 😠. How can you tell a kid that his interests are a waste? The first lesson of 2020 in the studio is this afternoon. I am excited to begin 2020 with a playful mathematics session. 🎇 Happy New Year! ✂️ Wising you a year of learning and making. ✏️ We started the New Year by making #starwarssnowflakes My 8yo cut out this #babyyoda snowflake using a template by Anthony Herrera. He recommends having good scissors, a sharp x-acto knife & patience. We found having patience was most important. I really wanted to do the x-acto knife cutting myself but he insisted on doing it himself. When I started spouting warnings and “be careful”..he said I was making him nervous. It was a reminder for me to have confidence in what kids can do.
