Prehistoric Art

In my last post Learning About Art, I wrote a summary about our study of western art in preparation for visiting museums in Europe.  Before sharing my thoughts on visiting museums with kids and looking at Modern art, it would be helpful to see how we studied each art period or artist.  Continue reading Prehistoric Art →

Learning About Art

September 5, 2018January 7, 2019 Maria Arana3 Comments

We spent three weeks this summer exploring Europe with the kids.  Before our trip, the kids and I spent about two weeks studying the artist and art works we would see during our trip.   The time we devoted to our art study was well worth it. The kids were able to identify art worksContinue reading Learning About Art →

After a wonderful summer of travel, we are back home finding ourselves adjusting to the back-to-school routine.  When I last wrote an entry the kids and I were spending time learning about art.  We took time to learn about Renaissance artists form Florence, Impressionist, Post-Impressionists and Modern art in preparation for our tripContinue reading Back-to-School →

Summer Days and Learning at Home

June 1, 2018January 7, 2019 Maria AranaLeave a comment

When school gets out, the kids and I spend the first week or two of summer vacation unscheduled.  There are no camps, classes, or planned activities for the day.  We hardly even leave the house during the day. I need these couple weeks to slow down and recharge as well.  It is during these slowContinue reading Summer Days and Learning at Home →

Multi-Sensory Learning at Home

When I think about the ways kids learn and the way an environment can support learning, I am reminded about the importance of providing kids with materials that can help them visualize a concept or an idea they are working on.  Many of us are visual learners and creating a visual to represent a conceptContinue reading Multi-Sensory Learning at Home →

Building Math Fluency

May 11, 2018January 7, 2019 Maria Arana3 Comments

I’ve had a couple conversations about how kids learn math facts recently. I thought I would share how I helped my kids develop math fluency and share some resources you can use to help your child strengthen his or her math fluency.   To better understand the approach I take to learning math factsContinue reading Building Math Fluency →

Authenticity, Connectedness and Social Media

May 7, 2018October 8, 2020 Maria AranaLeave a comment

Over the weekend I came across an Instagram post by Where Women Create asking, what it means to be authentic in the context of social media.  In the post the author raises questions that I continue to grapple with. “What if, in our quest for authentic we’ve developed dual lives, dual personas, and a total inabilityContinue reading Authenticity, Connectedness and Social Media →

A Learning Play Date

May 1, 2018January 7, 2019 Maria AranaLeave a comment

This week in Arizona many schools are closed due to the teacher walkout.  There is a great necessity to adequately fund schools in the state. I support the teachers, administrators and support staff who have stood their ground to put pressure on the state legislature and leaders to come up with a solution. Since theContinue reading A Learning Play Date →

Finding a Focus

April 24, 2018January 7, 2019 Maria AranaLeave a comment

About a month ago I wrote a post about finding inspiration and identifying my passions.  I decided to dedicate time to research areas of interest and to reach out to other educators whose work interests me. I found inspiration in the work of by a former primary teacher in Canada who designsContinue reading Finding a Focus →

Middle School Learners

When my kids were young, I would direct their attention toward nature, building blocks, art supplies, etc to keep little hands busy. We also took trips to the zoo, the park, science museum and gardens.  At home, I would place materials out for them to play with and and use.  It was a very naturalContinue reading Middle School Learners →

Welcome

Welcome to the Guided Learning Studio! I’m Maria. A mom of three and a former classroom teacher turned tutor. I am committed to providing engaging learning experiences based on a learner’s needs and interests.

✏️After eight delightful years, Guided Learning Studio is closing. 🌻My happy place 🥰 Beautiful Pima Canyon Trail in Tucson. My daughter and I took a lovely sweets class with @wagashiissho while visiting Kyoto. Learning to make chrysanthemum wagashi was a special experience. Kyoto is also a magical place with ethereal gardens. 🧚🏽‍♀️ Fairy Garden 🧚🏾‍♀️ Learning to watercolor with tutorials from @letsgomakeart . This Italy tutorial from their #wanderlust kit is a favorite. Happy New Year! Work desk turned creative spot for 2023. Exploring oil pastel and color with inspo from @pearfleur video. 👩🏽‍🎨 I finally gave our maker space some attention. A clean table for a holiday season of painting & crafting. 🎨🎄
