Teaching at Home

I recently realized that tutoring has always been part of my life.  In high school I tutored students in math at the local middle school.  As an engineering student in college, I volunteered at a high school.  Tutoring is what led me to consider switching majors to education.  I enjoy the learning and teaching process and observing the ways kids make sense of concepts.  I find it fascinating and it doesn’t feels like work.

It has been a long time since my days as a tutor but at the beginning of this school year, I began to tutor a very sweet boy.  Working with a learner individually has rekindled my love for learning and teaching.  I use our creative space to set up the activities and materials we use.  I like to incorporate open art activities into the tutoring sessions for a few reasons.  The art activities act as a warm-up for the work that is ahead.  It warms the hand muscles and allows the learner to settle into the session.  It also provides the time to get to know and connect with the learner.  The process of making and creating often serves as a source of inspiration for writing.

I use a multi-sensory approach to introduce and practice concepts or skills.  Learners enjoy building and making letters before writing.  It is important to begin with words that are important to them, especially when they are young.

After making “mom” in the kinetic sand, he made a picture for his mom and wrote “mom” on it several times.  It was gift from the heart.

I am thankful for the opportunity to tutor again.  Having a learning space in our home where I can incorporate art activities and different materials for multi-sensory learning is a plus.  It makes the hard work of learning to read, write and develop number sense enjoyable.

This year I hope to find few more students in need of extra learning time or who want a challenge.    I have all the materials organized and ready to go.
